Week 12 of pregnancy and i worried about caffeine intake

Coffee, Tea or Milk?

Anyone who have worked with me or know me know i must have cup of Nescafe in the morning to start the day. Even while i was in school i needed my Iced Nescafe by recess or things will get bad really quick. Tea is my way of being "healthy".

One of my may-jah concern during pregnancy and the first question i asked my Dr Tang was
"Can i have my coffee and tea?!"

It was as if the sky opened up and rained delicious lattes and sweet tea when Dr Tang said"of course my dear, a cup of coffee and tea is okay"
"Yippeeee!"
Of course i had begun reading about the do's and don'ts of pregnancy. but the all seem to say NO.NO.NO.NO. (see links below) and i stop reading those Nos and started looking for the YESes. All seems to say in moderation, coffee and tea would not harm the baby. but i needed to hear it from my doctor. I needed her blessings. The caffeine-fear-mongers words were making me uneasy to sit on my growing buttocks.
"It was previously considered safe to have caffeine equal to the amount of 1-2 cups of coffee per day while pregnant. A new study, published in the Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology January 2008 issue, indicates that more than 200 milligrams of caffeine per day can increase the risk of miscarriage substantially." Caffeine and Miscarriage, Suite 101
This next article analysed several studies to conclude to be safe, try to moderate to 200mg of caffeine per day and dont base your decision on ONE study alone. *cough fear mongers

"pregnant rats were exposed to caffeine and various teratogenic effects, resorption of fetuses, and a reduction in fetal and placental weight occurred...A 60-kg human would have to consume approximately 50 to 70 cups of coffee daily to achieve the equivalent dose used in the study...The Collaborative Perinatal Project identified 5378 mother-child pairs who were exposed to caffeine during the first trimester. No evidence of a relationship between caffeine consumption and congenital malformations was identified. A follow-up analysis of 2030 malformed children and maternal use of caffeine by the Collaborative Perinatal Project also failed to identify caffeine as a teratogen. Other investigators have also found no association between caffeine consumption during pregnancy and congenital anomalies....The most consistent finding regarding caffeine consumption during pregnancy was the possible association with low birth weights." "Coffee: Safe During Pregnancy?" iVillage.
Fear-mongers states that caffeine in pregnancy causes miscarriage and stillborn baby. Some advise don't drink at all. Some says 1 cup is fine. Some says 2-3 cups are fine. Some gets technical to the milligrams. Thats when things gets even more paranoid. As if your hormones arent driving you crazy enough. Now you have to count the miligrams of your caffeine intake per day?

You are pregnant. You are already stressed. Dont stress yourself too much over this.

In all honesty, why shouldn't i have my coffee and tea if it relaxes me? If avoiding stress and withdrawal syndromes that makes you hell for everyone means a cup of coffee or tea. By all means, have a cup.
"If you're a devoted java junkie or cola guzzler, caffeine withdrawal won't be easy. To minimize symptoms — which may include headaches, irritability, and lethargy — ease off gradually. Start mixing decaf with your caffeinated coffee. Or reduce the caffeine in homemade hot beverages by brewing them weaker or for a shorter time. If you love a soothing cup of English Breakfast, steeping your tea bag for just one minute instead of five reduces the caffeine by as much as half." "Caffeine and Pregnancy" BabyCenter
Happy mummy = happy baby. Plus, my hormones were going crazy at it is! coffee and tea makes mummy's hormones behaves. Stressing about it only makes the pregnancy worse. Creates anxiety. Disfunctional mind. Stress on the marriage. the body. did i mention your little fetus? So a cup of coffee OR tea can help this? Please, go ahead. The baby is tougher than you think. Just dont consume it all day and night. then, its a problem even i would admit to.

I complained. i sulked. but i didnt have coffee everyday and a cup (or two) of tea per day..i still limited myself. with help of Daddylicious refusal to make me tea but plenty of Milo instead and the occasionaly trip to Starbucks :)

Tried as i might to have a cup a day of one of my favourite beverage obviously failed a several times in the pregnancy. One day i went over the "limit" and Daddylicious (then a mere Hubbylicious) decided to put his foot down and said
"No more tea for you!"
Note: Even with daily caffeine intake that could have been more than 200mg but with self aware ("this is tea number what eh? better remember") limitations, PP was born 3.31kg (7.2 pounds). See, fear mongers, moderation is the key. not fear.

Which brings me to...
Facebook status back when i was really really desperade for my 3rd cup of tea of the day.

Caffeine Withdrawal: from AT LEAST 3 cups of coffee or tea per day to 1 cup per day. hence temper tantrum to Daddylicious over tea and major drama!

Dayang is asking her husband, why wont you let me have tea?! (Thu, 09 Apr 2009 17:21:06 GMT)

Dayang SENSELESS POSTINGS = eviiillll husband who wont let me have tea and hijacks laptop (Thu, 09 Apr 2009 17:32:02 GMT)

Dayang is gonna pick up the courage to order decaf coffee at Starbucks soon. I miss you Starbucks KLCC... (Fri, 10 Apr 2009 21:11:19 GMT)
<--i did stop coffee right after i found out i was pregnant. not even decaf. so soon after the "ok go" from Dr Tang. I was dreaming of Starbucks vanilla lattes. only now, its "One tall decaf vanilla latte please" total, utter, bliss

Facebook status back when it was safe to say the baby ain't going nowhere the next 6 months

Also, at 12 weeks it was safe to assume baby's survival rate has vastly increased and paranoia majorly been minimised. hence, the official notice of pregnancy. should have added advanced apologies for major dramas due to hormones. if only i knew that was coming.

Dayang like to officially announce she is 3 mths preggy! NOW she accept the congratulations and please pray for our (future mummy, baby IT and erm...future daddy) safety and health. coz...its me you're talking about here. (Tue, 07 Apr 2009 14:43:06 GMT)

And today 12 April 2010, PP is officially 6 months old at 7.2 kg (15.8 Pounds) Happy half-year birthday my sweetheart!

Hearing baby first heartbeat and a year after

Grandnana is how old? Shhhhh. Grandnana is the silly one on the left. its genetic.

Today, our family gave thanks to God for many reasons, my sister's save recovery from her brain surgery, my mother's *secret age* birthday and also for giving us PP especially now she is 6 months old by having a "kenduri kesyukuran" (a thanksgiving event).

2nd ultrasound scan at 12 weeks
 7 April 2009

mummylicious with 5months and 28 days old PP
10 April 2010

Same time last year, she was in me. Today she is a thriving 6 months old baby. A baby that refuses to roll but still thriving, growing beautifully.

Same time last year, i could feel her fluttering movements in my tummy. Today, she's kicking her legs at my face, my neck, and on my tummy.

Same time last year, we heard her racing heartbeat for the first time. Only other way i could hear was to annoy Dr Tang everyday. As much as i love Dr Tang, i didn't want to see her everyday just to listen to PP's heart. Today, all i have to do is lay my ears on her heart to hear her heart beating.

According to Dr. Spock, your best chance to hear your baby's heartbeat for the first time is by week 12. Our prenatal appointment was right on time. It would be scary not to be able to hear the heartbeat on week 9 or 10 just because we were unlucky to hear it! So i advise dear friends if you were pregnant. Only insist to listen after week 12 or you only worry yourself sick if you get "unlucky".

"After the 9th or 10th week after your last menstrual period, you might be able to hear your baby's heartbeat at your prenatal appointment. Your obstetrical practitioner probably uses a Doppler instrument for this purpose, which bounces harmless sound waves off the fetal heart. The way the sound comes back is affected by motion, so a beating heart creates a change in the sound that can be picked up by the receiver in the Doppler. Whether you actually hear the heartbeat at 9 or 10 weeks depends partly on luck-the instrument must be placed at just the right angle. It also depends on the position of your uterus, and if you're slim or heavy. By the 12th week, the heartbeat can usually be heard consistently, using the Doppler instrument for amplification." Dr Spock's Hearing the Fetal Heartbeat
Nevertheless, even with hearing PP's heartbeat, Daddylicious was worried. When you first hear a baby's heartbeat in the womb
1. it's loud
2. it's fast. it sounds exactly like a galloping horse.
So Daddylicious asked Dr Tang with a very worried face "is that normal?!" as most parents would ask even if they already know IT IS!
Dr Tang smiled and said "don't worry, it is."
IT is. IT is there. IT is very real. IT is very very real. The Peanut is no longer just a blob. In just a month time, IT became a baby.

At 7 weeks, PP was a blob.

At 12 weeks, PP is really really really there, here, in my womb! with distinctive parts, a face you can see! a head! hands! arms! legs! you can see the BUTT! hear her heartbeat! It is real! I had a living being inside of me. I really had a living being inside of me. I was really becoming a mother.

I think, at the moment i heard her heartbeat for the first time and see her "wave" at me, was the first time I accepted this was really happening. Don't get me wrong, most of the time i was still in periods of i-can't-believe-i'm-pregnant until i was about to give birth. but hearing her heartbeat and seeing her not in blob form really was one of the moment that made me stop and say "daaang, i really have a baby inside of me and i am no longer responsible for myself! Dang, this is real" Dang indeed. And now, there's no denying it. I am no longer responsible for myself and she is real. Real and here next to me.

It is also the start of Daddylicious being worried about being a daddy. and buying magical items for baby and mummylicious to make mummylicious happy during her hormones rollercoaster before and after baby :)

Thank you God, Allah SWT for this gift of life as precious as light that You have bestowed upon us (without us even expecting You to).

In my quest to remember the "Whens" of events as i backtrack the memories of pregnancy, i needed to find my Facebook status history. And i did. I remember emotions and things happening during my pregnancy but the exact when always eluded me. These statuses would really help me keeping the dates in check.

Honestly, this post is more for myself than to anyone else. Plus, it describes a lot of what i felt at that moment in time of early pregnancy and so on. kudos for reading if you're willing

Let's call this "Facebook status back when..." entry number 1.

Baby first photo and the origin of PP (the conception!)

Doesn't IT look like a peanut?
First ultrasound scan @7 weeks.

The origin of Princess Peanut aka PP

Doesn't it look like a peanut? It does doesn't it?

On 10 March 2009, we took our first ultrasound scan of "Baby It". As cliche as it sounds, it was magical. Even though she looked like a weird blob. A blob that looked like a peanut. I wrote a note to "Baby It" sometime before the ultrasound.
Dear Baby It,
Mummy is sorry we (mummylicious and daddylicious) are calling you It. You are only 5 weeks and maybe 4 days old. a size of a pea they say. You are not even a feotus yet! a mere blob parasite alien species embryo in mummy's uterus. That is why you are called It.
Since you are so young and the doctor said that 20% of pregnancy at this period ends in miscarriage, i am truly scared. I am happy that a blobby version of you is there in the first place! but because of the possible pain from losing you, even a pea-sized you, brings fear in my heart. So the joy of celebrating your non-human arrival is muted.
You gotta know, your mummy is kind of a drama queen. so having this fear and unable to express it fully to everyone she's close to is killing her! killing me. and your daddy! your (hopefully) less than 50% of DNA! kept telling me not to think about it. So i need a soundboard. A place. no one but maybe others who share my predicament can know. for now.
and your daddy! kept telling HIS friends about you! I mean hello! i'm the one with the bloating, the cramping, the migraines, the moodiness and hormones banging around! i deserve to tell my friends first! ....when i'm ready. well i tell the rest of my friends when i'm ready. ...
I hope you are save, Baby It.
Yes, i was calling her my "little lovely alien parasite (LLAP)" "IT" "Pea blob" and then decided on "Baby It" after even a simple "It" and "LLAP" was deemed too cruel by the rest of the family even though i think its adorable.

But after looking at the blob of a peanut. I decided to call her "Peanut". So through out the pregnancy and even now, we call her "Peanut". Or PP. Thats for Prince or Princess Peanut as no one can tell if DNA decides its a Prince or a Princess just yet thus, PP it is :)

Searching for the right doctor

Before the ultrasound was done. I was busy scouring the Selangor and WP state for the best O&G doc there is. My requirements were,
The doctor must be a SHE. I don't care if some people claim that male O&G are suprisingly more gentle than females, I will be more comfortable with a she poking around my private area.

She will understand my dramatic behaviour and answer all my nonsense questions that threads my heart every minute of the pregnancy.

I must like her. (i am very very particular about my doctors!) If i find one i like opposite of town. I will go to her.
When I went to my GP doc for confirmation pregnancy test. She advised me to wait until after the baby is 5-7 weeks before doing an ultrasound test. (or else, you shall have to do a very uncomfortable test...let me tell you this. The method involves going IN). So based on her calculations, that should be at least a couple of weeks.

The wait for couple of weeks were filled with me looking through every parenting forums for best advices for hospitals and doctors. I do have contacts with other O&G doctors as my previous job were for a medical organisation with a whole list of doctors from every field as volunteers and also a VERY popular and charismatic Dr.Jim O&G doc as its leader and my boss who was also my mother's doctor. But they were all based in Ampang and HUKM. Therefore, not ideal before checking out nearer hospitals. Lastly, my mother told me to head to Sime Darby Medical Center (SDMC) and see Datuk Dr. Siti. a very famous O&G who also took care of my mother and delivered my sister.

SDMC, near enough i thought. First place to look at i believe. So off we skipped and hopped to the hospital soon after. but just as we wanted to make an appointment with Dr Siti, the receptionist advised us, as she is VERY popular, SDMC's first-come-first-serve waiting policy they adhere to could mean a loooooong wait for me whenever we go to see Dr Siti. I changed my mind there and then and asked for other FEMALE doctors serving there. There were only 2 others. Dr Delaila and Dr Tang Boon Nee. I chose Dr Tang for no reasons than she is the only one available for the date we wanted.

The moment she greeted me (or more likely my husband) I'm glad i chose her.
Dr Tang: "DAAYANNNGG" in a beautiful sing-song voice as if i'm her long lost friend instead of a new patient! i love it. and i was behind the curtains. So she was looking at my husband instead of me using my name.
Hubbylicious: "Im not dayang, im the hubby!" using the same sing-song voice as she.
She laughed and said "of course you are".
She then she was next to me greeting me with a smile. A doctor with a smile! first time patient and i got a joke, a laugh and a smile all in a few seconds of meeting! imagine that! She's young but not too young. She have this spirit around her that assured me i was in good hands and she will take good care of me. I think i feel in love with my doctor. First choice of doctor, i don't think i need to look for any other. I was super confident with her. She answered all my questions patiently and with a smile.

I think finding the right doctor for you is as important as eating the right food while pregnant. you dont want to be lectured or feel any way uncomfortable with your doctor. He or she will be taking care of you and your baby for 9 months. He or she will be the answers to your concerns and fears, and not to compound and expand them. Have a doctor that make you feel happy, tells you the do's and don'ts without making you feel like an infant yourself.

I was as paranoid as a new mother-to-be can be. She told me not to worry. So long there's nothing to worry about, she won't let me worry and all i have to do is take care of myself and enjoy the pregnancy! I like that.

I also like the fact she assured me that there is nothing wrong with drinking coffee and tea everyday. Just don't drink only coffee and tea and for 24 hours! Ahh...i can have my daily 1 cup of Starbuck's vanilla latte after all with no worries. love her. Hearts all around!

As with all new appointments, calculations of estimated date of birth were made: 24 October 2009. And also estimated conception date *winkwink*. Don't be shy about it, there's only one way to get pregnant, that is to know and do the birds and the bee talk. Calculating the date lead us to Chinese New Year hols 2009. Ahhh....our trip to Cherating in Jan 2009.

The conception story

Don't be silly! of course there won't be vulgar stuff here.

As i said, it is highly possible we were in Cherating when the "magic" happened (i know cringe. "magic"). It is also interesting to note that, i had my first traditional "urut batin" then.

"Urut batin"
is normally a traditional massage for men and women to stimulate your internal reproductive organs, not sexual organs per se. Its not supposed to be pleasureable. unfortunately whenever it is uttered nowadays, it has taken a totally scandalous meaning-*"special massage anyone? off the menu? men only?" you get the drift.

There was only 1 massage place at Cherating Beach during that time and it was by this old lady who was 58 but looked 40!. She does traditional malay massage. No hanky panky. But when she found out i'm married, no babies, not pregnant but open to pregnancy, she massaged my nerves near the groin on the inside thighs. It hurts like mad!!! but after a few seconds, it was...ok. although slightly weird. During which, she also read some doa-doa (prayers) that were supposed to "help" me get pregnant. Sceptical much? OF COURSE I WAS! ...

Hubbylicious also got a traditional malay massage by her which he later told me she hit the same nerves. But erm less direct or near the groin. (i hope?) Again i repeat no hanky panky. Well her husband was around making me coffee and reading my energy level (yeah. not kidding but im less sceptical about this than my special nerve massage).

We were sceptical over the would-be effectiveness of her prayers and massage so dang near our privates. But thinking back....hello?me? got pregnant? around that time? me? the non predictable period girl with unideal weight and behaviour for possible pregnancy? Maybe it was coincedence. Maybe it was fate. But maybe she, the traditional masseuse helped in her prayers. Whatever it is, if you are trying for a baby, it doesnt hurt to go to her if you are around Cherating Beach.

Me, oblivious to what was going to change

Our last irresponsible trip together

Also, I must have been evoking strong maternal instincts and kicking in the hormones as i take photos after photos of children on the beach that weekend. My mind must be telling me something that weekend. Must be something in the line of
My brain: "YOU ARE IN THE MIDST OF CHANGE! A SWIMMER IS ON ITS WAY! REALISE IT! REALISE IT!"
And i just went *snap**snap* happily. See some pictures below.

Please note they are low quality photos as it's in a popular public photosharing site.
I have issues with people taking other people's work as their own.

Pregnancy signs and symptoms, test and denial

Image from Going2B.com

Let's start from the beginning.

When: 21 Feb 2009, Saturday
Where: Sunway Pyramid (a huggeeeee shopping mall in suburban Petaling Jaya, Malaysia)

Daddylicious was away for golf. I was in NEED for a manicure treatment. It was, a beauty emergency. As my usual manicure place require appointments and they are in Bangsar (way further away than Sunway), I decided to head to Sunway to search for a manicure place. Now, previously Sunway was a decent shopping mall. A size of 3 football fields with 4 floors but it was amongst my first time there after the renovation. Now, it tripled the old size! with many many wings and many many parking entrances.

To say it simply, i was an ant trapped in Victoria Beckham's Birkin's collection looking for an unknown unnamed manicure place. As i was wandering my way through the heavy weekend crowd, looking for this elusive shop, i got lost. often in the opposite wing where i was supposed to be in, according to Sunway Pyramid's confusing gigantic map placed at the END/START of each wing. I went around the shopping mall twice. covering 3 floors. i started to sweat. i started to feel flustered. and hot. and LOST. and angry. angry at Sunway. angry at my husband (Daddylicious) for playing golf that day. angry at this couple of teenagers holding hands! and then, in the crowded weekend in the middle of the wing, i started to cry.

CRY! alone! in the middle of everything. and i said to myself
"oh F*ck." (the irony, i know)
So i ran to the nearest public bathroom and shut myself in a cubicle all the time asking myself,
"why the hell are you crying?!!"
"Need to clear head. need to calm self. need to find that magic manicure place"
Lo and behold i found A Cut's Above even though it wasnt what i was looking for. The same franchise in Bangsar i usually do my hair and manicure. As i was being calmed by one set of hands giving me a shampoo and another set of hands lovingly stroking my fingers, i begin to have my suspicion.

As soon as i arrive home. I Googled 'Pregnancy symptoms' and 'Am I Pregnant?' and 'How to know you're pregnant' 'and begin ticking, or in my case doubting the boxes. The questions are same for every site. So let's borrow this list from stages-in-pregnancy.com

Breast changes. Blue veins running across the breast - breast tenderness - darkening of the areolas.
-eeeh. no. still normally dark areolas. how much darker can it go? black?

Cramps
. A result of the expanding uterus at around the time the menstrual period is due.
-eeehh..nope. nothing.

Fatigue. Hormones run rampant during pregnancy and the side effect is extreme fatigue, especially for a first time mom.
-hmm maybe. I've always been lazy but extreme laziness to wake up in the morning have kicked in recently. Maybe i'm just don't want to go to work? not that i am known to be a morning person anyhow. hmmm...maybe. half tick. That word "hormones" might be it. But then again. I am a woman...with hormones. not balanced hormones.

Food cravings or aversions. Sometimes those funny little food cravings or aversions will appear right away.
-ai nope.

Frequent urination.
This occurs during the first trimester and the last trimester. Early on it is due to the swelling of the uterus over the bladder. As the baby and uterus grows it will lift off the bladder giving some relief during the 2nd trimester.
-what kind of question is this? i drink a lot! its hot here. drink=urinate. nothing new.

High basal body temperature.
If you chart your temperature - it will continue staying in the high range because of the progesterone running through your body. Sometimes on a fertility chart you may even see a third level of hi
gh temperatures called "triphasic". This is a possible indication of implantation taking place. This is among the first month pregnancy symtpoms.
-huh? not that i understand but lets half-tick based on Sunway shopping mall marathon before.

Implantation spotting.
This can occur anywhere from 3 to 12 days post ovulation. This sometimes happens when the fertilized egg burrows into the uterine lining
-hmm nope

Morning sickness. The effects of the pregnancy hormones can cause morning sickness with or without vomiting even before you know you are pregnant.
-the most common. but NOPE!

So i scored 1/8. Tiredness that can be mistaken as laziness. and one word about 'hormones' and increased body temp that can be questioned by my head exploding while looking for that elusive shop. That.did.NOT.help. wheres the "YOU WILL SUDDENLY CRY FOR NO REASONS AT ALL IN A SHOPPING MALL!" ????. Yeah. Fantastic.

I even failed at another list which state missed period. but only for those whose period comes regularly. Mine doesn't. So i fail.

It was still in the 'maybe-im-just-being-paranoid' stage.

My reasonings why i can't be pregnant:

I only stopped The Pills late December 2008. That's less than 2 months ago. I'm not the healthiest person. I was only 46kg. hardly the optimum weight to get pregnant. My periods were irregular before The Pills so its not meant to be regular after The Pills. Can't .be .pregnant. We're not trying! just leave it to Fate. to God.

When: 22 Feb 2009, Sunday morning.
Where: home

Extreme laziness/fatique sets in. but somehow manage to ask hubby to go to pharmacy and get me a pregnancy kit. his response? a blank stare. so in all my non-patience had to shout,

"Go.Buy.Pregnancy.Kit!NOW!"
After i peed on a stick, waited the longest 2 minutes i have ever endured, my life turned upside down.

Just for those who never peed on this particular set of stick. We used a ClearBlue Pregnancy Test kit. You are supposed to wait 2 minutes (3-5 minutes to be sure) or until the line in the second window appears in 2 minutes. We saw it clear as day less than a minute. and we waited 10 minutes to look again just to be extra extra sure. There were questions of course as we anxiously looked at the blardy stick even though its clearly evident it's positive.
"is the line clear?" "is that the line?" "don't you think its faint?" "it's not that clear, right?" "the line is faint! what does that mean?" "is this thing accurate????"
It is accurate. We have our proof right beside us now.

The 2 blue lines showing a cross appeared.

The video of my reaction.
I was obviously in shock. and nearly in tear
s. Except at that time. i wasn't sure whether it was of joy or fear.

I.couldn't.be.pregnant.
Me? Pregnant?

When: 23 Feb 2009, Monday morning.
Where: Dr Pearl's clinic

In the doctor's office, the 2 blue lines appeared again.
